Day 104 – 111: Wairoa to Rotorua via Te Urewera

Sat 6 – Sat 13 May 2017

  • Km walked: 299
  • Total Km: 2137

From Wairoa it is 58 kms to Te Urewera so it will take two days of walking to reach Lake Waikaremoana by my reckoning. I have been in contact with the Department of Conservation at Waikaremoana which has confirmed two alarming facts. The Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is closed for most of the route along the lake and the road is closed to all traffic between Waikaremoana and Murupara. Continue reading

Day 100 – 103: Napier to Wairoa

  • Km walked: 114
  • Total Km: 1838

From Napier I want to make my way north to Te Urewera national park, the location of Lake Waikaremoana to do the great walk – it has been a must-do destination from the very first stage of planning my journey back in December last year. Continue reading

Day 153: Arrival at Cape Reinga

Sat 24 June 2017

  • Km today: 15
  • Total Km: 3103

Today I reached Cape Reinga lighthouse and the northern most end of the Te Araroa trail at the much photographed AA sign. This marked the end of my 5 month journey of New Zealand by foot.

There is so much to reflect on and to write, which will be coming soon… But first some rest. Oh and look for a job I suppose.

Massive thanks to every one who has supported me along the way and been so generous with donations to St John – donations can still be made via my blog.

The pre arrival crew walk the final kms with me (Ben, Adam, Gillian, Tash, Kirsten)

A fantastic St John welcome (Shane, Louise, Robin)

It’s a wrap

Day 92 – 99: Palmerston North to Napier

Mon 24 April – Mon 01 May 2017

  • Km walked: 201
  • Total Km: 1724

There has been some deliberation again on my part about the route that I would take from Palmerston North. I had wanted to walk the Manawatu Gorge track however it is closed due to a slip at the far end so plan B is to walk across the Saddle Road. Continue reading

Tue 11 – Sun 23 April

  • Km today: 223
  • Total Km: 1523

Wellington, Kapiti Coast to Palmerston North

I’ve arrived in Wellington to coincide with cyclone Cook, not by choice mind you. It brings wind and low cloud but not the sheer volume of rain that was forecast. Still it is dreary and wet. Continue reading

Pancakes on the top deck are always a welcome start to any day I’d say. Thank you Aquapackers for a delicious breakfast. Despite the snoring (French Canadian, not mine) that kept me up half the night it was a comfortable sleep. Continue reading

  • Km Today: 12
  • Total Km: 1163

Abel Tasman Track

There wasn’t too far to travel this morning to get to the western end starting point of the Abel Tasman track at Wainui Bay. The folks were returning to Nelson today and flying back to Auckland so it was sad goodbyes before I set off up the hill and over to Whariwharangi Bay, really only a quick jaunt of a couple of hours. Continue reading

Heaphy Track

Tis the last day of my Heaphy Track walk. The Australians are up at 0400 and gone by 0600 as they have a shuttle to meet at Brown Hut at 1130. Not my idea of fun. I will be walking down to Brown Hut, which is supposed to take 5 hours and will meet the folks there. Continue reading
